The Mona offshore wind park, being developed by the Mona Offshore Wind joint venture - a partnership between Germany’s EnBW and BP - has received development consent from the UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. Located in the Irish Sea, the 1.5 GW project was awarded as part of the Round 4 Offshore Wind Leasing process. Before construction can begin, the project must still obtain a marine licence from Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
BP and EnBW secured seabed rights for the Mona site from The Crown Estate in 2023. The planning application was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in February 2024 and accepted for examination in March 2024. After a detailed review, the Inspectorate submitted its recommendations to the Secretary of State in April 2025. The wind park is expected to be operational by 2030.
In addition to Mona, BP and EnBW are also developing the 1.5 GW Morgan project, also in the Irish Sea, and the 2.9 GW Morven ScotWind project off the coast of Aberdeen. The United Kingdom seeks to reach up to 50 GW of clean energy from offshore wind deployed by 2030. At the end of 2024, the country had an offshore wind capacity of over 16 GW.
