Botswana issues tender for 300 MW coal-fired power plant

The Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources of Botswana has issued a tender for the development of a greenfield 300 MW coal-fired power plant. The Expression of Interest (EoI) seeks information on the development of the plant by an Independent Power Producer (IPP). The deadline for submissions of Expression of Interest is 27 November 2013. The Ministry expects to determine its IPP procurement process as of January 2014. The plant should be commissioned between 2016 and 2019. African Energy Resources plans to submit an EoI for the plant, as the group is considering building a 300 MW coal-fired power plant and a captive coal mine in Sese; Sese is a low cost thermal coal project, which is estimated to contain enough coal to supply an estimated 2,400 MW of thermal capacity for over 25 years. With the development of the Morupule B coal-fired power plant, its proposed 300 MW expansion and this new greenfield power plant, Botswana could turn into a net power exporter.
