Bosnia-Herzegovina has approved changes on a law to allow the construction of a EUR1.5bn gas pipeline promoted by a US consortium (Daily Sabah, 15/04/2026). The Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on “Southern Gas Interconnection Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia” was approved by the Bosnian Parliament with as a critical project due to the EU’s planned ban on Russian gas imports set to take effect starting on 1 January 2028. The law mainly modified the route of the gas pipeline, which is set to run through the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (one of the country's entity), while the project was expanded to enable faster gasification of the industrial part of the country.
AAFS Infrastructure and Energy, a US consortium, is promoting the project which includes a gas pipeline with a capacity of 3 bcm/year, and some thermal power plants to replace coal-based electricity production. With the approval of the Parliament, the law may enter into force once the country signs the corresponding interstate agreements with Croatia and the AAFS for the development of the project.
Bosnia-Herzegovina imports all its gas (average of 250 mcm/year since 2000) from Russia, primarily through Hungary and Serbia.
