The Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities has ordered the state-owned power transmission system operator (TSO) Energinet to expand the current feasibility study area at the Bornholm island in the Baltic Sea. The offshore wind project at the Bornholm island may have an installed capacity of 3 GW, instead of 2 GW. The project will include wind parks, power cables and electrical installations, and is subject to the Danish Environmental Assessment Act.
Plans to build two energy islands were announced with the country's climate plan in May 2020, one in the North Sea consisting of an artificial island connected to 3 GW offshore wind capacity (up to 10 GW in the long term) and the other on Bornholm connected to 2 GW offshore wind. Detailed studies of the seabed and on the environmental impact of the project are expected to be completed in 2024.
