Bonaparte CCS Project (10 Mt/year) granted Major Project Status by Australia

The Bonaparte CCS Project, operated by Japan’s INPEX through a joint venture, has been granted Major Project Status by the Australian Government. The Bonaparte CCS Assessment joint venture is led by INPEX Browse E&P (53%), a subsidiary of INPEX, in partnership with TotalEnergies CCS Australia (26%) and Woodside Energy (21%). It is the first offshore CCS project to receive the status in Australia.

The project aims to safely and permanently transport and store CO₂ in the Bonaparte Basin, which has an estimated carbon storage capacity of over 10 Mt/year. INPEX sees the project as one of the world’s largest potential CCS initiatives, with a key role in decarbonizing northern Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

The joint venture began preliminary front-end engineering design (FEED) work in April 2025 and plans to commence CO₂ injection around 2030. Reservoir appraisal data is being analysed to support a GHG Storage Formation declaration, required for an injection licence.

Australia's GHG emissions declined by 28% between 2005 and 2024, falling from 613 MtCO₂e to 441 MtCO₂e, with a national target of reaching 350 MtCO₂e by 2030. The country aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
