INPEX Corporation has announced that its Bonaparte CCS project has received from the Australian government the identification of an offshore saline aquifer storage site for its GHG injection and storage operations in the Northern Territory (INPEX Corporation press release, 16/10/2026). The declaration represents the first of its kind in Australia.
The Bonaparte CCS Joint Venture is operated by INPEX Corporation’s subsidiary, INPEX Browse (53%), TotalEnergies CCS Australia (26%) and Woodside Energy (21%). The project became the first of its kind to receive Major Project Status from the Australian Government in 2025. Pre-front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) began in April 2025.
The first CO2 injection is targeted for the early 2030’s, subject to regulatory approvals and commercial agreements. The Icthys JV is expected to become the project’s anchor customer, helping to reduce by 40% Icthys LNG’s CO2 emissions.
