Bolivia’s YPFB discovers a new field with 20 bcm of gas reserves

The Bolivian state-owned oil company, Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), has announced the discovery of a new gas field in the Okinawa area through studies in the Remanso-X1 (RMS-X1) well. The well is undergoing condensate production tests and is expected to yield approximately 0.7 tcf (19.8 bcm) of gas and 52 mbl of liquids. Another well, Yarará-X2, is also undergoing production tests, with expectations of boosting oil production by over 700 barrels per day.

The RMS-X1 well was initially drilled in 1984 and later closed. The operations are part of YPFB's strategic goals and the Upstream Reactivation Plan, aiming to reevaluate mature and closed fields for production reactivation. The company seeks to reduce the import deficit of liquids and gas through these efforts, aligning with the Fuel Substitution Plan. Bolivia's natural gas reserves stood at around 183 bcm and oil reserves at 33 Mt (end of 2021).
