BOEM unveils draft EA for a 15 GW offshore wind area in northeastern US

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has unveiled a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) of the Gulf of Main Wind Energy Area, which includes eight potential leasing areas in federal waters off the US States of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire and could feature 15 GW of installed offshore wind capacity.

The draft EA is related to the potential impacts of offshore wind energy leasing in the Gulf of Maine and considers the potential environmental impacts of future projects. By unveiling the draft EA, BOEM launched a 30-day public review and comment period, and the input received through the consultation will be used to develop a final EA for a potential commercial wind energy lease sale in the area.

At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. At the end of 2023, the US only had 42 MW of offshore wind capacity.
