The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has designated two wind energy areas for offshore wind development in the Gulf of Mexico, off the US states of Texas and Louisiana, with the potential to produce enough energy to power around 3 million households.
The first area is located approximately 44 km off the coast of Galveston, Texas. The area totals 508,265 acres (over 2,000 km2) and has the potential to power 2.1 million homes. The second area is located about 104 km off the coast of Lake Charles, Louisiana and totals 174,275 acres (over 700 km2). It has the potential to power over 740,000 households. The next steps in BOEM’s renewable energy competitive leasing process include issuing a proposed sale notice with a 60-day public comment period planned for the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.
At the federal level, the United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021).
