BOEM completes environmental review of a 2.6 GW wind project off Virginia (US)

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed its environmental review of the 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, which will be located about 43.5 km off the coast of the US State of Virginia. A Notice of Availability for the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project will be published by BOEM on 29 September 2023.

The CVOW project, developed by the US company Dominion Energy, is expected to generate enough electricity to supply 660,000 US households. It will comprise 176 wind turbines, each with a 14.7 MW capacity, as well as three offshore substations. Offshore construction of the project is expected to begin in 2024, and completion is scheduled for 2026.

At the federal level, the United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2022).
