BlueFloat Energy enters the Taiwanese offshore wind market with a 1 GW project

BlueFloat Energy has unveiled its first floating offshore wind project in Taiwan named Winds of September. The project, with a planned capacity of over 1 GW, will be located 25 km off the coast of Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City in an area of around 125 km2 at around 70-80m water depth.

The Bureau of Energy within the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan plans to launch the first binding round for 3 GW of offshore wind projects with commercial operation dates in 2026-2027 in the second or third quarter of 2022. A second round for another 3 GW to be commissioned in 2028-2029 is expected in the second quarter of 2023 and the third round for 3 GW to be commissioned in 2030-2031 is expected in the second quarter of 2024. Taiwan intends to increase the volume tendered in its upcoming offshore wind Round 3 from 10 GW to 15 GW. The authorities plan to add 1.5 GW/year of offshore wind capacity from 2026 until 2035, instead of previously planned 1 GW/year. The island is expected to develop a total of 9 GW of offshore wind between 2026 and 2031 and 6 GW between 2032 and 2035.
