BlueFloat and Renantis submit EIA for a 1,170 MW floating wind project off Italy

The renewable energy companies BlueFloat Energy and Renantis have submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedure for their planned 1,170 MW Kailia Energia floating offshore wind project, located off the coast of the Puglia region of southern Italy. The EIA was submitted to the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry of Culture. Once completed, the Kailia Energia wind project will feature 78 wind turbines, which are expected to generate enough electricity to supply about 1 million Italian households and avoid the emission of 2 MtCO2/year. The project’s cost is estimated at €4bn.

Kailia Energia is the second floating offshore wind project that the partnership between Renantis and BlueFloat Energy plans to build off the coast of Puglia. Indeed, in January 2024, the partners submitted another EIA for the development of the 1.3 GW Odra Energia floating offshore wind project. BlueFloat Energy is also developing the 975 MW Tibula Energia floating offshore wind project off the north-eastern coast of Italys’ Sardinia.

As of end 2022, wind represented nearly 10% of Italy’s installed capacity with 12 GW and 7% of its power generation with nearly 21 TWh.
