Swiss power generator BKW is considering to decommission the Mühleberg nuclear power plant in 2019. The group is required by the nuclear authority ENSI to invest about CHF 400m (about €330m) in safety measures; BKW's board will decide by the end on the year whether or not investing in the plant. If BKW rejects the plan, the 373 MW power plant will have to be stopped in 2017; if the board approves the investment plan, safety works will have to be achieved within 3 years and will enable to operate the plant up to 2026. BKW is looking for a third way, i.e. decommissioning the plant in 2019. In turn, the group would ask the ENSI to review its safety investment requirements. BKW is facing a drop in electricity prices, making electricity exports to Italy unprofitable, and cheaper electricity from Germany (power generated at Mühleberg is significantly more expensive than the average on European markets, at CHF 7c/kWh, compared to CHF 5.4c/kWh).
