The French natural gas transmission system operator GRTgaz estimates that the share of renewable gas (biogas) in France's natural gas final consumption could be raised to 30% by 2030 and reach a level of 90 TWh. In this regard, the gas network operator underlines the need for targeted support measures to accelerate the development of biomethane production facilities. GRTgaz also expects new support measures for biogas for road vehicles to raise the number of gas-fuelled vehicles to 300,000 to 1 million by 2035, which would represent 10% of total gas demand.
According to GRTgaz's reference scenario, the French total gas consumption could decline by 1.2%/year between 2016 and 2035, to 364 TWh in 2035. This perspective of an overall decline in consumption comes mainly from gains in energy efficiency and the deployment of more efficient and more energy-efficient equipment. Gas heating should continue to progress over the 2016-2035 period, with 1.6 million new dwellings and an additional 92 million square meters of business areas opting for gas heating.
GRTgaz expects gas demand for power generation at more than 90 TWh in 2035, depending on nuclear and renewable trends in the French power mix. The transmission system operators highlights the role of gas as a back-up fuel in a context of rising renewable power generation.
