Beximco moves ahead with a 280 MW solar project in Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Export Import Company (Beximco) has awarded a number of contracts totalling BDT17bn (US$200m) for the construction of a 280 MW solar project in Bangladesh. The power plant will be located and executed at Sundarganj, Gaibandha District in the Rangpur Division. Beximco has awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and operation and maintenance (O&M) contracts to a consortium comprising Rays Power Infra and Zetwerk Manufacturing Businesses and has selected LONGi Solar Technology to supply solar modules. In addition, ABB has won the contract the contract that covers the switchyard and substation, including control solutions, while Confidence Infrastructure will build the required transmission line from Sundarganj, Gaibandha to Rangpur Grid Substation, Rangpur. The company plans to develop another solar project with a capacity of 45 MW. Both projects are expected to enter commercial operations in 2022.

The government has set a target of 3.9 GW of renewables in 2041. Solar accounts for around 1% of Bangladesh’s installed capacity, with 330 MW. More than 2.2 GW of solar projects are currently under development.
