Chile’s Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) has approved the environmental qualification resolution (RCA) for the 200 MW/1 GWh Huañil battery energy storage system (BESS) project, proposed by Limes Renewable Energy in Quelen Alto, in the Coquimbo region of Chile. The US$188m project is expected to enter construction in March 2026 and to last 18 months (commissioning in September 2027).
Storage projects are multiplying in Chile. Grupo Ibereólica Renovables has started the permitting process for 1,330 MW of storage capacity, including the Antofagasta Hybrid Renewable Energy Project (1.2 GW of solar coupled with a 990 MW/4,950 MWh BESS). In addition, T-Power (Toesca Asset Management's energy platform) has signed contracts with Trina Storage for a 141 MW/722 MWh BESS to be added at the 141 MW Luz del Norte solar PV plant in Copiapo (Atacama region).
Trina Storage will also supply a 90 MW/481 MWh BESS to Central Dock Sud (YPF Luz) for the BESS Alma Sur project in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (AMBA).
