Belo Monte becomes Brazil's largest hydropower plant

Norte Energia has commissioned the 14th large unit of the Belo Monte hydropower project in Brazil. The power plant is located at Vitória do Xingu, in the state of Pará. It consists of 18 power units totalling 11,233 MW and another 6 units totalling 233 MW of installed capacity. So far, 14 large units and 6 smaller units have been commissioned, raising the operational capacity to 8,788 MW. With this new unit commissioned, Belo Monte becomes the largest 100% Brazilian-owned power plant, surpassing the 8,535 MW Tucuruí power plant and the 7,000 MW Brazilian share of the Itaipu power plant. The US$26bn project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2019. 

Norte Energia is owned by Eletrobras (49.98%, of which 15% directly, 15% through Chesf and 19.98% through Eletronorte), Neoenergia (10%), Petros (10%), Funcef (10%), autoproducers (9% Vale and Cemig, 1% Sinobras) and Amazônia Energia (Light and Cemig, 9.77%).
