Belgium’s transmission system operator (TSO) Elia Group plans to build an artificial energy island which will be linked to up to 3.5 GW of offshore wind capacity and serve as a hub for power interconnectors with the UK and Denmark.
The Princess Elisabeth Island will be located in the North Sea, 45km off the Belgian coast, and will serve as a link between wind parks in the country’s second offshore wind zone and its onshore high-voltage grid on land. Construction of concrete caissons filled with sand is due to start in 2024, and should be completed in 2026, followed by the construction of the electrical infrastructure on the island. The draft plans for the energy island are now ready and the tender process is being prepared.
The project will be integrated to Belgium’s Maritime Spatial Plan (2020-2026), which provides for the development of a new wind power production zone in the Belgian North Sea called the Princess Elisabeth zone.
