Belgium cancels gas-fired power project tender

The Belgian government has decided to stop the tender for the construction of new gas-fired power plants, that had been launched in early 2014 and whose winner was expected to be announced at the end of March 2015. As part of the "Wathelet Plan", SPFE had called for a tender regarding 700-900 MW of capacity to be put on the Belgian grid against a maximum subsidy capped at €90 000/MW/year for combined-cycle gas turbines and at €45 000/MW/year for open-cycle gas turbines during six years. Three companies, namely Dils-Energie, Sloe and Essent (RWE), submitted bids before the deadline (July 2014). Dils-Energie (JV between Advanced Power and Siemens Project Ventures) planned to develop a 920 MW CCGT power plant in Dilsen, while Sloe and Essent planned to connect existing gas-fired power plants in the Netherlands to the Belgian network. The European Commission was reviewing the tender, considering that it might give advantages to some companies and that it would not solve the short term electricity supply problems, as the new capacities would not be available before 2019. The Belgian government will now search for other solutions to ensure electricity supply.
