Belarus plans to build a third unit at the 2.2 GW Belarusian NPP

The Belarusian government has decided to build a third unit at the 2.2 GW Belarusian nuclear power plant, in the Grodno region (Belta,14/11/2025). The use of the existing BelNPP infrastructure has the benefit of it already being an approved site with the necessary resources for its development and functioning. Additionally, the government also aims to start surveys to develop a second nuclear power plant to meet future energy demands.

Developed in 2014, the BelNPP has two VVER-1200 reactors rated 1.1 GW each, which were commissioned in 2021 and 2023, respectively. The power plant produced around 14 TWh in 2023, covering about 37% of domestic power consumption, which is increasing by around 3%/year since 2020. The government expects to see an increase of energy consumption from data centers and mining farms, which are estimated to represent about 1.3 TWh in 2025, twice their 2023 level.
