Belarus commissions Ostrovets-1 nuclear project

Rosatom has commissioned the 1,110 MW (1,194 MW gross) Ostrovets-1 nuclear reactor, in north-western Belarus. The Ostrovets nuclear project consists of two VVER-1200 reactors built by AtomStroyExport (ASE), the engineering subsidiary of Rosatom, and Belarus obtained US$9bn from Russia for the project. Construction started in 2013. In November 2020, the VVER-1200 pressurized water reactor (PWR) was synchronised to the grid and started delivering electricity to the grid. The second reactor is expected to be commissioned later in 2021.

As a consequence of the start of Ostrovets-1, which is located 20 km away from the Lithuanian border, Litgrid, the Lithuanian power transmission operator, has stopped importing electricity from Belarus. Indeed, in September 2020, the governments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania pledged to stop energy trade with Belarus after the launch of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant, and a system of certificates of origin of electricity will be implemented for this purpose.
