Bear Head secures environmental approval for 2 GW hydrogen project (Canada)

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Nova Scotia has approved the Environmental Assessment for a green hydrogen and ammonia production, storage, and loading facility in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, eastern Canada. The project is developed by Bear Head Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BAES Infrastructure (United States), and is permitted for up to 2 GW of electrolysers that would benefit from abundant wind, tidal, and hydropower resources. The Bear Head project could produce up to 350 kt/year of hydrogen and up to 2 Mt/year of ammonia. The project will be developed in phases, starting deliveries by 2028 and using existing LNG tank foundations in place to store ammonia.

The Bear Head project was initially developed as an LNG import terminal by Access Northeast Energy (2002). In 2004, after receiving all key regulatory approvals for LNG imports, it was sold to Anadarko, which started site construction works, including LNG tank foundation pouring. The project was then sold to LNG Ltd (LNGL) in 2014 and repurposed for LNG exports (fully permitted for LNG exports), before being taken over by its executive team in 2021; in 2022, it was sold to Buckeye Partners and the management team retained the project development lead.
