BayWa r.e. plans to develop 1.2 GW of onshore wind energy in Sweden

The German renewable project developer BayWa r.e. and the Finnish pulp and paper maker Stora Enso have partnered for the development of 1.2 GW of onshore wind capacity in Sweden. The capacity is expected to be developed within Stora Enso’s private forest across central and northern Sweden, planning to deploy more than 158 wind turbines with the potential to expand it to also include solar and battery energy storage capacities.

The initial internal assessment by BayWa r.e. of the identified areas for the development is in an early planning stage. The partners plan to continue with feasibility studies, environmental and cultural heritage surveys and a public consultation process with the involved municipalities and local communities. The permitting process is planned to be completed within five years. The partnership aligns with Stora Enso's commitment to sustainable land use of its more than 1.2 million hectares of forest assets in Sweden.

At the end of 2024, onshore wind capacity represented almost 32% of the total installed capacity in Sweden (53 GW).
