BASF cancels plan to build a 850 MW CCGT project with Engie in Belgium

BASF has decided to withdraw from its project with Engie Electrabel to build an 850 MW gas-fired power plant near its chemical plants in Antwerp (Belgium), citing uncertainties over the economic context and the capacity payment scheme ("mécanisme de rémunération de capacité", CRM), aimed at granting a sufficient power capacity when nuclear power plants close in 2025.

Engie Electrabel will still go ahead with its three other CCGT projects presented in December 2020 (2,100 MW). Two large gas-fired power plants are planned in Vilvoorde (870 MW unit, on the site of the 255 MW Vilvoorde gas-fired power plant acquired from EM Generation Brussels (EMGB) in April 2020), and in Les Awirs, in the Liège region. A smaller 330 MW unit would be built at the Amercoeur site in Charleroi. The company has already launched applications for permits and secured approval from the power transmission system operator (TSO) Elia to connect the projects to the network. Engie aims to secure all permits before the first Capacity Remuneration Mecanism round on 1 October 2021.
