The Swedish energy group Vattenfall has signed a deal with BASF to sell 49% of Vattenfall's 980 MW Nordlicht 1 and 630 MW Nordlicht 2 wind projects located in the German North Sea for an undisclosed amount. The Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 projects are subject to a final investment decision (FID), which should be taken in 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and full commissioning in 2028. They are expected to generate about 6 TWh/year, enough power to supply 1.6 million German households.
Vattenfall is responsible for the development and construction of the plants in Nordlicht and intends to use its 51% share of future electricity generation to supply customers in Germany, while the German chemicals group expects to use its 49% share to supply electricity to its chemical production plants in Europe, including its giant Ludwigshafen site in Germany.
