Bangladesh seeks to pass a law extending rental power supply by 5 years

The State Ministry for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh has introduced the Speedy Supply of Power and Energy (Special Provision) (Amendment) Bill 2021 to the Parliament, which aims to extend the special law on the purchase of electricity from rental power plants by another five years.

The electricity capacity of Bangladesh reached 28 GW at the end of 2020. It is dominated by gas (64%), followed by oil with 27%, coal with 6%, and renewables with 2%. As of 2020, the private sector has total capacity of 8.8 GW, including 1.4 GW from power rentals. The country started signing deals for renting power plants for up to 16 years, and the law was passed to authorise the plants.

In addition, Bangladesh is currently in final talks to import around 500 MW of electricity from the 900 MW GMR Upper Karnali hydropower project, currently under construction in Nepal.
