Bangladesh’s state-owned oil and gas company Petrobangla plans to develop three new LNG terminals in the country, which will have a total combined regasification capacity ranging between 2,000 and 3,000 mcf/d (21 to 31 bcm/year). The proposed new LNG terminals would be built in Payra (south-western Bangladesh, 5.2-10.3 bcm/year), Moheshkhali (5.2-10.3 bcm/year) and Matarbari (south-eastern Bangladesh). Of the three LNG terminals to be set up, two will be floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), while the other will be a land-based terminal. A timeframe for the projects has not yet been communicated but the new terminals are expected to help the country meet a rapidly growing gas demand, which is projected to surge by more than 60% by 2030.
Bangladesh currently has two LNG terminals, both located near Moheshkhali and with a regasification capacity of 500 mcf/d (5.2 bcm/year) each. One was built by the US’ Excelerate Energy, while the other was set up by the UK’s Summit Group.
