The Bangladeshi government has inaugurated the country’s current largest solar power plant, totalling 200 MW and located in Sundarganj near the city of Rangpur (northern Bangladesh). The plant comprises 550,000 solar panels covering around 600 acres (243 hectares). Teesta Solar Limited, a subsidiary of Bangladesh’s Beximco, started building the solar plant in 2018. The power plant was first connected to the grid in November 2022 and started supplying 90-140 MW of electricity on a trial basis to the Rangpur grid through a newly built 34 km transmission line.
Bangladesh currently has nearly 5 GW of solar capacity under construction or development. In December 2022, the Saudi energy company ACWA Power partnered with Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) to develop and build a 1 GW solar power facility in the country.
As of end-2021, solar represented slightly more than 1% of Bangladesh’s installed capacity with 329 MW. Renewables in general only represented about 2% of the country’s installed capacity. In January 2023, the government of Bangladesh set a target to cover 40% of its power generation with clean energy (including nuclear) by 2041 (against less than 2% at the end of 2021).
