Bangladesh completes first of four LNG pipelines

The Gas Transmission Company of Bangladesh has completed the construction of the first of four gas pipelines, aimed at delivering gas from the LNG import terminal projects to the domestic market.

Two 3.75 Mt/year (5.1 bcm/year) floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) are being developed at Moheshkhali island in the Bay of Bengal by Petrobangla and Summit Group. Two further onshore terminals are expected by 2021, namely a 6.75 bcm/year project by Petronet LNG in Kutubdia and a 4.7 bcm/year project at Matarbari by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).

The first gas pipeline has already undergone testing and will deliver up to 800 mcf/d (22.6 mcm/d or 8.2 bcm/year) of gas from Moheshkali to Anowara. A parallel pipeline will be completed in 2018. Two additional pipeline projects are being developed to extend gas deliveries to the rest of the country: a 30 km-long gas pipeline is already under construction from Anowara to Fouzdarhat to supply gas to the city of Chittagong, while a 180 km-long pipeline will be built to transport gas from Chittagong to the rest of Bangladesh.
