Bangladesh's Cabinet purchase committee approved eight contracts awarded to both local and international companies to build eight power station totalling 1,235 MW in electricity capacities. The deals involve three private gas-fired projects to come into operation in 2012-2013, while the other five projects are rental electricity generation projects scheduled to be commissioned in the next lean season. The last five projects have a total capacity of 340 MW. Out of the three first major projects, two contracts were awarded to the local company Summit and GE under competitive bidding: Meghnaghat 335 MW dual-fuel project and the Bibiyana Phase-2 340 MW combined cycle gas-fired project. The Bhola gas-fired plant will be built by the Ranhill-STS consortium (Malaysia), with a capacity of 225 MW. Local company Wintara Inc will set up a 99 MW rental power unit in Ghorashal or Narsingdi while the local company APR Energy will set up a 50 MW rental power plant and run it for three years either in Meghnaghat. United Enterprise will generate 53 MW gas-fired power in Ghorashal or Ashuganj under a three-year rental power contract. Another 48 MW barge-mounted gas-fired rental power project is being awarded to EQ Capital Energy. A 90 MW furnace oil-fired combined cycle rental plant to be set up by Cambridge Energy Waste Management for a five-year term in Barisal or in Chandpur was also approved.
