Bahrain launches its energy transition plan, targets 20% of renewables by 2035

Bahrain has started the implementation of its National Energy Transition Plan (NETP), in which the country targets a share of renewable energy in its total power generation of 5% by 2025 and 20% by 2035. According to the NETP, Bahrain also plans to reach net-zero emissions by 2060.

Pertaining to the NETP, 303 applications have already been submitted for the installation of renewable energy from residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Out of those, more than 180 applications have been successfully commissioned and connected to Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) power distribution network, for a capacity of over 38 MW. Under the scheme, another 150 MW of renewable capacity is expected to be installed by 2026.

As of end-2021, renewables were negligeable in Bahrein installed capacity and power generation. The country relies almost exclusively on gas-fired power plants for its electricity generation.
