Bahrain inaugurates the 1.5 GW Al Dur-2 Independent Water and Power Project

The Government of Bahrain has inaugurated the Al Dur Phase 2 Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP), located in the south of Bahrain’s main island. The IWPP has a power generation capacity of 1.5 GW and includes a facility that can process 50m gallons (189m litres) of desalinated water per day.

The Al Dur-2 project, which cost an estimated US$1bn, will also be Bahrain’s inaugural utility to be integrated into the country’s 400 kV high-voltage transmission network. It was built in partnership with companies from Saudi Arabia (ACWA Power, 60%), Japan (Mitsui & Co, 30%) and Bahrain (Almoayyed Contracting Group, 10%). The project is an extension of the Al Dur Phase 1 IWPP, inaugurated in 2012 and with a power generation capacity of 1,380 MW and a desalination capacity of 48m gallons/day.

As of end-2021, Bahrain’s installed capacity stood at 8,775 MW (almost 100% gas-fired).
