Azerbaijan unveils new 2050 climate target in its NDC

The government of Azerbaijan has released its second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), targeting a 40% conditional reduction of to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 compared to 1990 level by 2050. The energy sector is expected to account for 30% of the reduction effort, including by increasing the share of renewables to 24% of the capacity by 2026 (16.5% in 2022, according to the NDC). In 2016, GHG emissions from Azerbaijan amounted to 61 MtCO2eq, according to the country’s inventory. Azerbaijan thus achieved a 32% reduction in emissions in 2016 compared to the baseline year of 1990.

In its first NDC, the country made a commitment to reduce its level of GHG emissions by 35% by 2030 compared to 1990. In 2021, Azerbaijan pledged to cut its GHG emissions by 40% in 2050 without specifying the base year.
