Azerbaijan set to boost gas shipments via TANAP pipeline in 2019

The Azerbaijan government has unveiled plans to double the volume of gas shipments transported via the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) gas interconnector from the current 1 bcm/year to 2 bcm/year in 2019. The pipeline ships natural gas from the Shah Deniz 2 gas field in Azerbaijan and started commercial delivery of natural gas in July 2018.

Designed to have an initial capacity of 16 bcm/year, it is aimed at delivering 6 bcm/year of gas to the Turkish market and 10 bcm/year to Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) holds a 58% interest in TANAP (of which 7% have been transferred to Azerbaijan's state-run oil company SOCAR), while Turkey's Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAŞ) and BP own 30% and 12%, respectively. The US$8.5bn (€7.2bn) project received a €932m financing package from the European Investment Bank in March 2018.

The Shah Deniz gas field is one of the largest gas fields in the world. It is operated by a consortium of BP (28.8%, operator), TPAO (19%), SOCAR (16.7%), Petronas (15.5%), Lukoil (10%) and NICO (10%). Shah Deniz is the starting point of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) series of pipelines that will transport natural gas from the Caspian Sea straight to European markets.
