Axens selected for 6 Mt/year Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (India)

The Indian oil company Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), through its affiliate Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), has selected Axens to supply advanced technologies in gasoline block for its 6 Mt/year Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (NREP) in Assam (north-eastern India). The Numaligarh refinery, located at Golaghat District, was commissioned in 2000 with a capacity of 3 Mt/year (60,000 bbl/d) to process local crude oil. The 6 Mt/year (90,000 bbl/d) expansion is expected to be operational by 2024.

In January 2019, NRL received clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs of India to develop the expansion project at the Numaligarh refinery. The project also entails the construction of a 1,400 km long crude oil pipeline with a capacity of 180,750 bbl/d which will span from Paradip to Numaligarh along with a 654 km products pipeline with a capacity of 120,500 bbl/d, which will run between the cities of Numaligarh and Siliguri. The expansion project aims at meeting the growing demand for petroleum products in northeastern India and enable the export of oil products to Myanmar, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
