Avelgem-Avelin HV connection preliminary studies kicked off (Belgium)

The Belgian electricity transmission system operator Elia has reported that a preliminary information meeting had been held on the high-voltage interconnection project between Avelgem (Belgium) and Avelin (France), which is one of the main axes in the Belgian grid forming an interconnection with the French grid.

This meeting provided an opportunity for Elia to present its preliminary draft to the inhabitants of the municipalities concerned. Elia expects to reinforce this existing 380 kV link by 2021. At present, this line has 49 pylons on a distance of 21 km and crosses 5 communities. The upgrade works will take place under the framework of the Belgian Federal Development Plan 2015-2025 and are expected to cost about €45m.

Belgium is now undergoing an energy transition process and plans to exit from nuclear power. In this regard, power interconnection with its neighbours is a priority for the domestic grid. The current line linking Avelgem and Avelin dates from 1974 and no longer meets the domestic needs.
