Austria unveils its network infrastructure plan for gas and power

The Austrian Ministry of Climate Action and Energy has presented the country’s integrated network infrastructure plan (ÖNIP), which is expected to make Austria climate neutral by 2040. The country also targets 100% renewable generation by 2030. The plan, which provides recommendations for renewable power generation expansion and electricity and gas network development, assume an increase in electricity demand from 73 TWh in 2022 to 90 TWh in 2030 and 121 TWh in 2040. Future gas supplies are expected to come biomethane and renewable hydrogen. APG plans to invest €9bn in the electricity networks by 2034, and the existing gas network is to be upgraded for hydrogen by €2bn by 2050.

The national target to increase the share of renewables in final consumption to 34% by 2020 has been exceeded by 2.5 points. According to the #mission2030 strategy and NECP, the objective is to raise this share to 46-50% in 2030 (33.8% in 2022), of which 100% for electricity (75% in 2022) and 14% in transport (10.1% in 2022).
