The government of the Australian State of Tasmania has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norway’s Equinor and Australia’s Nexsphere, the owners of the 1 GW Bass Offshore Wind Energy Project (BOWE), which commits both parties to partner to supply northern Tasmania with offshore wind power. The renewable power will be supplied to future green hydrogen and aluminium production at Bell Bay.
Following the signing of the MoU, the BOWE project, located in the Bass Strait, will progress through the feasibility licencing process once the area is declared, as set out in the Commonwealth’s Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act. In addition to the supply of offshore wind energy, the agreement will also see the parties working together to assist in northern Tasmania being declared an Offshore Renewable Energy Zone by the Commonwealth Government.
