Australia's renewable capacity additions slowed down in 2022

Australia added less new renewable capacity in 2022 compared to 2021, according to a report from Australia’s Clean Energy Council. The country completed 20 large-scale projects in 2022 totalling 2,257 MW, which is close to a quarter less than the 2,955 MW added in 2021 through 27 completed projects. Wind capacity accounted for about 1.4 GW of the new installed capacity, while large-scale solar reached 860 MW.

As for small-scale solar, more than 310,000 rooftop solar installations were added in Australia in 2022 for a total of 2.7 GW. This is also lower than 2021, when more than 377,000 rooftop installations were added for a capacity of 3.3 GW. Nevertheless, small-scale solar still represented nearly 26% of renewable energy generation in the country in 2022 (and 9.3% of overall power generation).

The largest completed wind project in 2022 was the Stockyard Hill Wind Farm in Victoria (532 MW), while the largest solar project completed was the Suntop Solar Farm in Queensland (150 MW). According to the report, Australia currently has 72 renewable projects under construction totalling about 9.5 GW, including 48 solar projects, 21 wind projects and 3 bioenergy projects.
