Australia’s NSW approves 7.15 GW of green energy and storage capacity

The Australian local government of New South Wales (NSW) has approved grid connection for ten renewable energy and storage projects with a combined capacity of 7.15 GW. The access rights allow for the wind and solar projects, as well as large-scale batteries, to connect to the transmission line in the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). Among the projects, there are three solar (2 GW), three wind (2.9 GW) and three BESS (1.7 GW) projects, plus a 500 MW hybrid solar + BESS, which are expected to generate over 15 TWh/year of energy once operational. ACEN, Lightsource bp, Pacific Partnerships and Potentia Energy are among the project’s developers. Once developed, the projects should produce enough energy to power 2.7 million homes by 2031 in peak periods and avoid 10.3 MtCO2/year of emissions.

Australia seeks to generate 82% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
