The 600 MW/1.6 GWh Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (MREH) — co-owned by Singapore-based clean-energy investor Equis and the Victoria government-owned State Electricity Commission (SEC) — has completed commissioning and entered commercial operation in Plumpton, Victoria (Australia) (ESS News, 09/12/2025).
The hub will soak up excess power generated from wind and solar and provide 1.6 GWh of storage through three battery energy storage systems located on a single site, each rated at 200 MW. Two units offer two hours of storage, while the third provides four hours. Equis said the project incorporates 444 Tesla Megapack units, three Toshiba 500 kV transformers, and a “world-first” underground 500 kV cable linking the facility to the National Electricity Market (NEM) high-voltage transmission system.
Initially developed by Australia’s Syncline Energy and formerly known as the Melton Renewable Energy Hub, the project became the first investment under the SEC’s AUD1bn (US$665m) program to deliver 4.5 GW of new renewable generation and storage assets. The State of Victoria aims to deploy at least 2.6 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 6.3 GW by 2035.
