Australia receives 1.2 GW gas + 780 MW /6.2 GWh BESS project for approval

Private Energy Partners has submitted a 1,188 MW gas-fired project with a 780 MW BESS for environmental approval in Queensland, Australia (Energy Storage, 09/04/2026). The Gladstone SDA Energy Hub project will be composed of six open cycle gas turbines (Siemens’ SGT5-2000E technology), each with a capacity of 198 MW, for a total nameplate capacity of 1,188 MW. The gas for the turbines will be supplied via a 5.5 km underground pipeline connecting the project to an underground storage of diesel and natural gas.

The BESS is proposed to be delivered in three phases, and it plans to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The BESS and gas turbines will connect to a dedicated 275 kV substation that will convert the on-site energy generated for export to Queensland’s transmission grid. The project is planned for 25 years of operation, with a potential for an extension.
