The government of Australia has announced the opening of a consultation on a new offshore wind zone in the Southern Ocean, in a 5,100 km2 area stretching from Warrnambool in Victoria to Port MacDonnell in South Australia. The area could enable the development of up to 14 GW of offshore wind, which would have the potential to allow the decarbonisation of the Alcoa aluminium smelter, one of Australia’s largest smelters and user of about 10% of Victoria’s electricity.
The Australian Government has set a target of net zero emissions by 2050, reduce emissions by 43% by 2030, and reach 82% of electricity generation from renewable sources. Australia has identified six key regions with offshore wind potential, including locations off of Gippsland, the Hunter, the Illawarra, northern Tasmania and Perth/Bunbury.
