Australia greenlights 500 MW/1 GWh Tallawang solar and battery project

Potentia Energy, a joint venture between Italy‑headquartered Enel Green Power and Japan’s INPEX Corporation, has confirmed that the Australian government has officially approved its Tallawang Solar Hybrid project under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act (EPBC statement, 21/11/2025).

  • The Tallawang project, located near Gulgong in New South Wales, will combine a 500 MW solar park with a DC-coupled 500 MW/1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The facility is planned to be constructed in the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), in the heart of New South Wales (NSW).
  • Potentia Energy is targeting the start of construction in early 2027 and operations in 2030.
  • When operational, it should generate 1.3 TWh/year.

The company aims to develop over 7 GW of renewable energy projects in Australia, focusing on wind, solar, storage, and hybrid technologies.
