Australia greenlights a 1.2 GW solar + BESS project in New South Wales

The Australian Ministry of Environment and Water has granted planning approval for the development of a 600 MW solar project with a battery energy storage system (BESS) of up to 600 MW/1,200 MWh, to be developed in Australia’s State of New South Wales. The Birriwa solar project is planned for a 1,200-hectare site about 20 km south-east of Dunedoo within the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).

The AUD1bn (US$667m) project will be connected to the national electricity grid via the Merotherie Energy Hub, part of the new transmission network infrastructure being developed by EnergyCo to accommodate the 6 GW of new generation capacity expected to be added in the Central-West Orana REZ. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6 Mt/year.

New South Wales aims to install 12 GW of renewable capacity under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap (2020) and to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
