The Australian Ministry for Climate Change and Energy has granted an offshore transmission license to the Marinus Link power transmission project between Tasmania and mainland Australia (Australian government press release, 25/09/2026).
The Marinus Link is a proposed 1.5 GW electricity interconnector, consisting of a 255 km subsea cable running from Burnie in north-west Tasmania to Waratah Bay in Victoria, followed by a 90 km underground section to the Latrobe Valley. The project is planned for development in two 750 MW stages, with the first one being scheduled to start construction works in 2026 and completion in late 2030.
The Marinus Link alongside the interdependent North West Transmission Developments project (together “Project Marinus”) represents a total investment of about AUD2.4bn (USD1.7bn). Once completed, Project Marinus is expected to reduce average wholesale electricity prices by around AUD15/MWh (USD10.5/MWh) in Tasmania and AUD17/MWh (USD12/MWh) in Victoria.
