Australia grants final feasibility licenses for 4 GW of offshore wind

Australia has granted final feasibility licences to three offshore wind projects that could deliver around 4 GW to Western Australia’s South West Interconnected System (Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water statement, 23/01/2026).

  • Bunbury Offshore Wind, led by French energy company EDF, has received two licences in the Bunbury zone.
  •  Westward Wind, a subsidiary of Ocean Winds (a joint venture between Spain’s EDP Renewables and France’s ENGIE) has been granted one.
  • The Australian Government has also opened applications for research and demonstration licences to support offshore renewable technology trials in Australian waters.

According to the statement, “In November, renewables provided a record 56% of generation to Western Australia’s main electricity grid.”

Australia targets 82% of its electricity supply from renewable sources by 2030 (up from 42% in 2024, according to our data).
