Australia grants final approval for Mulga Rock uranium project

The Ministry for Environment and Energy of Australia has granted its final approval to Vimy Resources' Mulga Rock uranium project in Western Australia.

The project, located 240 km east-northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia's Great Victoria Desert, is the third largest undeveloped uranium deposit in Australia, with a total of 76.8 million pounds (29,540 tU) of indicated and inferred uranium resources in four deposits. Vimy Resources, which started the approval process in July 2013, expects to produce up to 1,360 t U3O8 (1,153 tU) per year, over an up to 17 year production period.

In August 2016, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) of Western Australia had recommended the project for approval by the state's environment minister, including 14 conditions to minimise impacts. The final approval also includes conditions to reduce impacts on Aboriginal heritage sites, groundwater and soil.
