Australia grants feasibility licence to 2 offshore wind projects totalling 3.2 GW

The Australian Government has granted feasibility licences for two offshore wind projects to be located off Australia’s south-eastern coast, and totalling 3.2 GW of capacity.

Australia has granted a licence to the  2 GW Novocastrian offshore wind project, located off Hunter in New South Wales, which is being proposed by Norway’s Equinor and New Zealand’s partner Oceanex Energy. The AUD10bn project will be able to supply power to about 1.2 million households once completed.

In addition , Australia has granted a feasibility licence to the 1.2 GW Spinifex offshore wind project, located off the coast of Victoria. The project is a joint proposal of Australia’s Alinta Energy and Belgium’s Parkwind. It will be able to supply power to 650,000 households once completed.

At the end of 2023, Australia had a total installed capacity of 106 GW, of which wind accounted for 10% (11 GW). The country however does not yet have offshore wind capacity.
