Construction has officially commenced in Western Australia (WA) on two new transmission lines forming part of the Clean Energy Link – North (CEL – North) project, marking a key step toward supplying Perth consumers with additional clean electricity, according to the state-o wned distribution network service provider (DNSP) Western Power.
Work is now underway on 11 km of new transmission infrastructure, including:
- 6 km of 132kV transmission line between Padbury Substation and Wangara Substation; and
- 5 km of 132kV transmission line connecting the Northern Terminal to Henley Brook Substation.
The works are being delivered by Spanish clean energy infrastructure group Acciona. Completion of the transmission line works is scheduled for mid-2027.
Once completed, CEL – North will facilitate the connection and transmission of more than 1 GW of onshore wind capacity from the Mid West to the Perth metropolitan area.
According to the statement, these works follow the Cook Labor Government's announcement of AUD1.4bn (USD0.9bn) in funding to establish a Clean Energy Fund, which will support projects aimed at decarbonising WA.
